SAGE Mission | To advance youth entrepreneurship and community service around the orld, emphasizing ethical business practices, social responsibility, civic engagement and environmental awareness. Youth use their school learning to become self-reliant, create wealth and help others | What is SAGE? | SAGE provides high school students from throughout the world with an opportunity to complete business and social ventures to improve their communities and showcase their efforts on a world stage. It is a free, non-membership service available to all advocates of education in private and social entrepreneurship. A team of high school students is first organized and at least two mentors are identified from local businesses and universities. The size of a team ranges from five to 50 members. Under the watchful eye of their mentors, the team must then complete at least one entrepreneurship activity and one social venture during the academic year. At the end of the academic year, the teams come together to showcase their efforts through regional, national and international tournaments. The tournaments provide a competitive opportunity to not only present their efforts, but, also, to "benchmark" themselves against other teams for future improvements. The "referees" for these tournaments come from local and international businesses, as well as civic, nonprofit and education communities, giving the competitions a true "real world" perspective which helps build team competency. | Why SAGE? | Rather than competing with existing high school organizations and courses, SAGE invites all organizations and courses, without charge, to showcase the entrepreneurial innovation and creativity of high school youth before a panel of influential business leaders, while developing a direct connection to nearby colleges and universities. By helping interested organizations, schools and universities set up and operate tournaments, SAGE becomes a tool to draw more youth interest to entrepreneurship and community service. The intent is that, as more youth take part, more become economically self-reliant, civically active and socially responsible—critical traits needed in building a better future in every community. Whatever their career interests, youth are encouraged to participate because of the benefits to be had, for themselves and their communities. A dynamic SAGE team might consist of students interested in business, others in political science and public administration, others in cultures and languages, yet others in natural sciences and social sciences. | Where is SAGE? | SAGE is a growing international program based in Sacramento, CA. Thirteen countries currently participate: Brazil, China, Ghana, South Korea, Nigeria, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Ukraine and the USA. We expect to add at least five more countries in 2008. The Fifth Annual SAGE World Cup Tournament was held from July 31-August 4, 2007 in Odessa, Ukraine. See http://sageglobal.org for results. The Sixth Annual SAGE World Cup Tournament will take place in Abuja, Nigeria on July 21-28, 2008. Student teams representing each participating country will come together to showcase their accomplishments in their own countries, but they will also learn about commercial and social entrepreneurship in other cultures. Moreover, a whole day will be devoted to a cultural exchange and youth trade fair. | What are Leaders Saying? | Thanks to SAGE I left apiece of myself in Africa. Now that Team Nigeria has won the World Cup I can tell you that the Nigeria SAGE Coordinators gave blood, sweat and tears for over a year to pull it together and I can think of no more rewarding experience. Thank you again for the vision of SAGE!" Mr. Rich Shields, US Embassy, Abuja, Nigeria "I was completely amazed with what I saw. The creativity and enthusiasm of these young entrepreneurs was incredible! The Chico State university faculty and the SAGE mentors deserve a lot of credit for inspiring the next generation of business leaders. I consider myself sold on the benefits of SAGE and the work being done by the high school students. I look forward to working with them for years to come!" U.S. Congressman Wally A. Herger (California, Second District) "Thanks for giving me the opportunity to see SAGE in action! I had such a great time and was thoroughly impressed with the students and their business ideas. It really warmed my heart." Katherine Bihr, Ed. D., Executive Director, Tiger Woods Learning Center Foundation | Taking Part in SAGE
